Overworked, UnderPaid and usually Overlooked,
Sounds familiar?
That is your WordPress Data Base!
According to Wiki:
“Databases consist of software-based “containers” that are structured to collect and store information so users can retrieve, add, update or remove such information in an automatic fashion. Database programs are designed for users so that they can add or delete any information needed. The structure of a database is tabular, consisting of rows and columns of information.”
For WordPress; it is the engine that drives your blog every hour of the day, most of us tend to “Set it and Forget it”, and since it is constantly changing; it does require upkeep and maintenance!
Data Base Plugins (DBP’s) serve the purpose of keeping your WordPress Data Base in good shape and in turn keep your blog up and running and you do not have to use your CPanel Data Base Wizards or phpMyAdmin. Ignore maintenance and you will be facing Ghost Pages that belong to past plugins you deactivated way back; a few KB’s of data that will make your blog run slower (OverHead) or in the worst case scenario: Going off the web!
WP-Optimize
Author description:
“WP-Optimize is a wordpress 2.7++ database cleanup and optimization tool. It doesn’t require PhpMyAdmin to optimize your database tables. It allows you to remove post revisions, comments in the spam queue, un-approved comments within few clicks.”
WP-DBManager
Author description:
“Allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up and optimizing of database.”
Clean Options
Handle this one with care; it is for advanced users only! It does however supply a link to google any option you do not know BEFORE deleting it.
Author description:
“Finds orphaned options and allows for their removal from the wp_options table.”
GD Press Tools
Takes the place of a few plugins, but provide tools to optimize, repair and Back up your Data Base.
Author description:
GD Press Tools is a collection of various administration, seo, maintenance, backup and security related tools. This tools can be integrated into the various WordPress admin panels, can perform maintenance operations, change some aspects of WordPress, see detailed server settings and information. Plugin can also track posts and pages views for various popularity lists.
Things to remember:
-
Back up your Data Base FIRST: You would have a copy of your old Data Base before any changes to fall back on in case anything went wrong.
-
Optimize once a month: Unless you have a very busy blog; once a month would be sufficient.
-
Do NOT DROP or EMPTY any table you do not know what it is for!
Keep your Data Base clean and optimized and see your blog loading faster, reacting better to your readers needs and climbing up in popularity.
