Do not let the suites and the fancy offices or web sites fool you; do not let anybody tell you different: Marketing is a JUNGLE, complete with Predicators and Hunters, Survival for the fittest…
So how would you survive and prosper in that kind of brutal environment?
Obey Supply and Demand
Supply and Demand is King of The Marketing Jungle; it rules every business no matter how big or small. Countless numbers of ventures vanish in the mist because they did not go by it. Offer too much supply in your market (flood the market) and the prices go and nobody will make profit, ignore your market demands and you are heading straight to the red ink!
You have to find the balance in supplying what your market needs while keeping your customers wanting more of your products.
Be the Top Cat in a Small Territory
In other words: Go for Niche Marketing,
While it is tempting to dive into the market with a huge list of products and trying to fight your way into that jungle; it makes much more sense to find yourself a new patch of land where you are the dominating force; where your products are in demand and there is a lot of money waiting for grasp. If you are selling laptops for an example; selling batteries for laptops is a niche waiting to be filled.
Cater to your customers, not your Ego
One of the biggest mistakes the new marketers make is offering their customers what THEY think is their needs, without doing any market research and without any test marketing; while this looks fine in your point of view, your customers will turn to other places to shop and you will get lost in the process.
Give them a drum
As in a way to contact you; and it is not your social media bottoms or gizmos; your customers are not using DM @ when they are spending real time money, they need a Contact Page dedicated for capturing their feedback, purchase inquiries…etc.
Know your territory
Any survival coach will tell you that knowing where you at in the jungle is the key to surviving it, and by researching and poking around in your market; you would be able to know who is who, whom to approach for a joint venture and what to do with your newly found friends. This leads us to the next one,
Network, Network and Network some more
Nowadays; it is a requirement and not an option!
Networking will provide you with viable contacts which will become handy when you need them the most, in case you needed an IT professional for an example; or a supplier whom you did not know before. A forward approach to any new contact, with clear and specific description of what you are bringing to the table is your best shot at retaining that contact.
Face your competition
Another rule in the Jungle: You have to be ready to face your competition head on. You can not run away, you can not hide…it is after all a Jungle!
And since anything goes in the jungle, you can use whatever method is legal to fight them: Spy on them, check their traffic sources and overbid their Keywords…do whatever it takes to be the winner.
Watch for the changes in the wind
Those wind in marketing are the new Market Trends that emerge once in a while. You have to be on the lookout for them and try to take advantage of them. They might not stay for long; but you will make money if you know what they are and offered the products that fit them.
Keep your water supply clean
You think it is a strange one?
Not really, it is your legal responsibilities toward your customers; keep your entire Disclaimer, Privacy Policy or your Term and Conditions pages in plain sight. Make sure they are written in terms that everybody can understand. If you offer a guarantee or a refund for your products; show them in simple words without any false promises.
Nobody likes murky waters; your business should have none.
Keep your eyes wide open, hear every whisper and taste the fear of your competition when you make it to the Top.
